Welcome back to another episode of Tulsa Looks Good On You! Today, I am so excited to introduce you to Christa and Jennifer with Mindful Psychiatry and Wellness of Tulsa.

We sat down to talk about the unique challenges women and teens face today, and how their clinic is changing the landscape of local healthcare.

Filling a Gap in Women's Healthcare

Christa and Jennifer have worked together for a long time, both sharing nursing backgrounds. As they navigated life's transitions—like having kids and moving into perimenopause—they realized there was a massive gap in care that didn't feel fragmented.

Did you know that women were not even included in scientific studies until the mid-1990s? Because of this, modern medicine is just now catching up to a proper understanding of women's health and hormones. Mindful Psychiatry and Wellness of Tulsa was built to be a centralized place for this care. Under one roof, they offer medication management, brief therapy, extensive lab work, and a family nurse practitioner who can address hormones and weight loss services.

They dedicate 60 minutes to new patient appointments to truly listen to each individual story, helping to tease out whether a patient is dealing with a mental health symptom or a hormonal fluctuation.

Navigating Teen Anxiety and Social Media

As moms to teenagers, we also discussed the heavy burden on our younger generation. Christa and Jennifer noted that they are seeing high anxiety in teens today. Many young people missed out on normal life experiences due to COVID, which put extra pressure on them and set them back a bit socially.

Furthermore, today's teens have to navigate social media boundaries. The clinic helps young people understand that comparing themselves to someone else's "highlight reel" is not helpful, and guides them on how to process and set boundaries around the content they consume.

The Power of Boundaries

When asked for their best tip, their "word of the week" was simple: Boundaries.

  • Schedule Yourself: Moms take care of everyone else, but we need to put our own time on our schedules—even if it is just 15 minutes for a walk or a coffee to recharge.
  • Physical Boundaries: It is okay to say "no" to hosting the holidays, or to step into another room for a breather when you are overwhelmed.
  • Financial Boundaries: Relieve yourself of the pressure that everything has to look perfect.

Remember, every time you say "yes" to something that isn't in alignment with your goals, you are saying "no" to the people and things that matter most. Don't wait until you have completely burned yourself out to get support!
