Inside Tulsa’s Favorite Family-Run Daylight Donuts at 47th & Harvard
If there is one thing that brings a community together, it is fresh, locally made donuts.
For this episode of Tulsa Looks Good On You, we stopped by the Daylight Donuts located at 47th and Harvard to chat with the owner, Krissy. Taking over an established, beloved local business is no easy feat, but Krissy and her family have fully embraced the sweet (and sleep-deprived) life of running a Tulsa donut shop.
Here is a behind-the-scene look at what it takes to run one of Tulsa's favorite morning stops!
Taking Over a Tulsa Tradition
Krissy and her husband took over this specific Daylight Donuts location nearly two years ago. Before this, they had no experience in the donut business. Taking over from the previous owners involved overcoming a language barrier and diving headfirst into an incredibly demanding schedule.
Thankfully, the Daylight Donuts franchise network stepped up. Their local representative actually spent the night at the shop with Krissy’s husband, teaching him the ropes and the exact recipes needed to keep the display cases filled with the treats locals already loved. Today, it is a true family operation, with their daughters working the front counter!
The True "Baker's Hours"
If you think waking up at 5:00 AM is early, try working the true baker's shift.
To ensure every donut is perfectly fresh when they open their doors at 5:00 AM, Krissy and her husband arrive at the shop between 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM the night before. They work entirely through the night, baking and prepping, and keep the doors open until 11:00 AM.
Running a family business with these hours means getting creative with quality time—you won't find them having a traditional family dinner, but they make it work to serve the Tulsa community!
Fan Favorites: What to Order
When the display cases are full, what are Tulsans gravitating toward the most?
- For the Kids: The bright, colorful sprinkle donuts are the undisputed champions.
- For the Adults: The massive, perfectly glazed Apple Fritters. In fact, Krissy has dedicated regulars who park outside the shop before 5:00 AM just to ensure they get their daily Apple Fritter fresh out of the fryer!
Giving Back to Tulsa
Because Daylight Donuts makes everything fresh daily, they inevitably have leftovers when the doors close at 11:00 AM. Instead of letting them go to waste, Krissy and her family donate the remaining donuts to local police departments, fire departments, and local shelters like Trade Winds to help feed the homeless.
